The new electronic instrumental expressionism reflects on masterpieces of contemporary music and the avant-garde.
Kaum is a project by the Spanish-Argentine electronic artist Silvina Ávila and the Berlin-based contemporary classical pianist Jan Gerdes. It is the interface between the experimental sounds of the electronic avant-garde and the multifaceted aspects of contemporary instrumental piano music.
Kaum is the poetic creation of musical landscapes by mixing acoustic sounds from prepared/unprepared piano, toy samples, zither and other electronic elements, shaping the sound in real time.
Kaum naturally uses the stereotypes of contemporary piano music such as Cage, Stockhausen and Ligeti, minimalist music patterns, fragments of “romantic” figures and modified sounds, with the textures of avant-garde electronics to produce a new expressionist music beyond stylistic boundaries. The harmonic-rhythmic and acoustic language is complex, yet sensual, sometimes also integrating tonal harmonies, noise, rhythms and other elements of club culture.
