I am not an expert in dance or theatre, not even a good fan. Why lie? In my favour I will say that as a child I wanted to be a dancer, but that was when I was five years old, despite everything I know what the Max Awards represent. These last few days we have had Carlos Miró hanging around Can Monroig. Carlos has been a finalist this year in the Max Awards as best male dance performer. Probably few people have heard about it; here in Mallorca we always talk about the same things and the same people, who are generally quite mediocre and do mediocre things, but the true creators are ignored. We met Carlos recently. We met his brother, the designer José Miró - who by the way, has gone to live and work in New York where he is very happy. We also followed his daughters Julia and Martina, two dancers aged ten and eight who show great promise.
We met Carlos in May; we invited him to the opening of Incart…and he came!!!! Ahh!!!! Where most people pass by, look for excuses, delay and ignore, it turns out that someone like Carlos comes to see us, talks to us for a while and, as we have seen with good creators, falls in love with this house.
In short, a cocktail like Can Monroig + “the counter-current” Robert López Hinton + “the revulsive” Carlos Miró, was bound to produce a productive and, above all, creative proposal… In recent days we have seen Sarah Muñoz, Silvia Perez, Rafa Rigo, Niki Van de Hoorn, Julia and Martina rehearse under the direction of Carlos Miró. We know that Carlos could present his work in many other places, so we are very proud that he has chosen Can Monroig for this night of dance and that he has even created a choreography for this space: “joana i maría” the story of two sisters who remember moments of their childhood while hiding in a bunker during a bombing.
The truth is that Can Monroig is full of holes, they are bunkers from other times. As always, we end up connecting the past with the present.. This is the part that corresponds to us.
Carlos Miró presents in Can Monroig “Dance Night” on September 13, 14 and 15.
Tango Rojo was performed at Can Monroig in September 2013.
